Achill Island Seaweed Salt Launches

In December 2019, we launched our third product, Achill Island Sea Salt with Atlantic Wakame. Our decision to launch a seaweed salt was driven by the increasing interest in seaweed and seaweed products by consumers in Ireland and we wanted to offer a product that was nutritionally beneficial and in line with our ethos of harnessing natural resources in a sustainable manner. This ethos is mirrored by the Connemara Organic Seaweed Company in Rossaveal, Co. Galway who hand harvest Atlantic Wakame.

Achill Island Sea Salt with Atlantic Wakame

Atlantic Wakame (Alaria esculenta) grows in abundance close to the shore on rocks or in tidal pools all along the coast of Ireland. The plant itself is olive or yellow-brown in colour and can grow up to 4m in length and 25cm wide. It generally grows quickly in the winter months and is harvested mid spring to early summer when it is nutritionally at its best.

Atlantic Wakame has a mild taste making it very versatile. It has a similar flavour to spinach with a fresh salty after taste and mixed with Achill Island Sea Salt gives an exceptional umami flavour. The mild flavour of the wakame means that it works very well with other ingredients without overpowering them. The salty kick from the wakame also means that you use less salt, this is especially great if you are trying to reduce your salt intake. We love it sprinkled over roast potatoes or veg, over soups and salads or in baking, such as breads and savoury scones. It’s also great roasted with nuts and seeds for a little savoury snack.

You can purchase our Sea Salt with Atlantic Wakame over on our online store, or check out our store locator page for your nearest stockist. And if you’d like to learn more about The Connemara Organic Seaweed Company, then check out the recent interview we did with them in our partner series.
