Achill Island is famous for its wild Atlantic coastline, dramatic scenery, and rich cultural heritage. Now, visitors can discover another hidden gem, the craft of Irish sea salt. At Achill Island Sea Salt, we’re delighted to launch our brand-new guided tour at our visitor centre in Bunacurry, right where our sea salt is made.
This immersive experience offers a behind-the-scenes look at how we hand-harvest our award-winning sea salt on the edge of the Wild Atlantic Way.
The Achill Island Sea Salt Tour
Our 40-minute guided tour takes you on a journey through the history, heritage, and unique flavour of sea salt. Beginning with a short brand film, visitors are introduced to the story of Achill Island Sea Salt, from our family roots to our mission of reviving a traditional craft using modern, sustainable methods.
From there, our guide will bring you through:
- The Global & Irish History of Salt – why salt has been treasured for centuries.
- Achill’s Salt-Making Tradition – and how our pristine Atlantic waters create the perfect salt.
- PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) Status – what it means for quality, authenticity, and place.
- What Makes Our Sea Salt Special – from hand-harvesting to slow evaporation and unique flavour.
- Tasting Experience – sample our pure sea salt, smoked sea salt, and seaweed salt, and sweet treats.
The tour ends in our self-guided visitor centre, where you can watch the salt harvesting process up close, and browse our gift shop filled with our full range of salts, Irish-made collaborations, and Achill-inspired gifts.
